Dental Visit Expectations
If you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, you may not be sure what to expect. While there are different fields of dentistry, general services fall under the field of general dentistry. This form of dentistry will be performed by a general dentist.
What Is General Dentistry?
General dentistry is the field of dentistry that involves the maintenance and protective care of a patient’s oral health. This includes a variety of different services that are intended to ensure the longevity of the patient’s teeth, gums, tongue, cheeks and jawbone.
What Services Does a General Dentist Perform?
There are a variety of services that general dentists perform for ongoing oral health. Some of these include:
While you may be doing a great job with at-home care, there is still a strong likelihood that some plaque and tartar have built up. There also may be some debris that is more difficult to reach. Your dentist will perform a cleaning using special instruments to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy and free of any bacteria.
Part of a trip to a general dentist includes a routine checkup. One aspect of this checkup is a visual exam. Your dentist will take a look at your teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue to make sure that there is no decay or infection. If they have reason to suspect that there may be damage or decay, they may take x-rays.
If your dentist suspects that there is damage, decay or infection beyond what they can see during a visual inspection, they may opt to take x-rays. They also may take x-rays if you haven’t visited a dentist in a long time. They will then look at your teeth and jawbone to determine if there is any damage, decay or infection that they were unable to see during a visual exam.
What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?
There are some services that go beyond general dentistry—a lot of which falling under the umbrella of cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry is the field of dentistry that involves services that improve the look of the patient’s teeth or gums. While some of these services are purely cosmetic, others are necessary for ongoing oral health.
What Is Emergency Dentistry?
There may be an occasion in which an emergency occurs, and you can’t wait for a regularly scheduled visit. If this is the case, you may need to visit an emergency dentist. Emergency dentistry involves any dental services that need to be handled immediately. Generally, an emergency dentist will see a patient within 24 hours.
