More Information About Atascocita, Texas

History

Atascocita, Texas’ history dates back to the first European settlers to the region. As early as the late 1600’s Alonzo DeLeon had built a trail through the area that was known as the Atascosito Road. This military trail eventually led to the establishment of the Atascosito Settlement, which was used as a barrier between the French and native populations to prevent trading. By 1820, the military trail had become the most used road in all of Texas. It connected the region to San Antonio. Over the years, the Houston area has seen massive expansion and growth. The discovering of oil in the first half of the 20 th century created an oil boom that has yet to subside.

Today

Atascocita is one of the fastest growing cities in the entire country. It has been booming since the 1970’s when it was de-annexed from Houston. Houston had annexed it in the 1960’s, but this was shortly followed by the residents voting to retain their own autonomy. Since then the city has received several recognitions for its fast growth. The current population is almost 66,000, which is a 35,000 people increase since 2000. The community is located less than 20 miles from downtown Houston so its residents have access to all of the major city’s amenities and employment opportunities.

Things to do

The community is divided into 15 subdivisions. Each one contains its own recreational activities including parks, swimming pools, tennis courts, and various other family fun spots. There are also two larger recreational facilities located within the town, The Lindsay Lyons Park/Sports Center and I.T. May Park. Both of which offer playgrounds, sports fields, pavilions and community centers. In addition to the parks, Lake Houston borders the community on the east. Lake Houston is a popular spot for fishing, hikers, boaters, swimmers, and outdoor enthusiasts. It is a popular place during the warm months.

Atascocita is just a short drive away from Houston, which means that all of the city’s top attractions are within reach. There are several museums in Houston that offer excellent educational opportunities. Some of the most well known are the Lone Star Flight Museum, the Holocaust Museum of Houston, the Pioneer Memorial Log House Museum, the NASA Space Center, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Children’s Museum of Houston, and the Museum of Fine Arts. In addition to the museums, the city is also home to the Houston Zoo, Buffalo Bayou Park, the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, and the Cockrell Butterfly Center.

The city is also home to several venues to take in a wide variety of shows, sporting events, and performances. Houston is home to four professional sports teams. The Houston Texans of the NFL, the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball, the Houston Rockets of the NBA, and the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer. All of these teams put on a great show and are worth checking out. The Houston Symphony is also a great place to take in a performance for music lovers. And of course, the Rodeo Houston is a huge part of Texas’ history.
