More Information About Crosby, Texas

History

Crosby, Texas is located in Harris County just to the Northeast of Houston. Its history dates back to before Texas was a state in the union. It even dates back to before Texas’ independence from Mexico. The spot where Crosby sits today was settled by one of the first 300 colonists to settle in Texas. He established a home in the region in 1823. The land was granted to Humphrey Jackson by the Baron de Bastrop. From this first settlement, Jackson eventually asked the Mexican Government for permission to form the San Jacinto District, which would fall under control of the Austin Colony. The permission was granted and the area began to grow.

The town eventually took shape near the Southern Pacific Railroad. It was named after G.J. Crosby. He was a railroad construction engineer. The town started to develop in the 1860’s. At first it was just a general store along the railroad. It eventually became a shipping and retail center in the region. It capitalized on the booming lumber and agricultural industries taking shape in the area. The region grew slowly throughout the end of the 19 th and beginning of the 20 th centuries. The Great Depression hit the lumber industry hard and the boom that was taking shape was slowed. Luckily for the area, oil was discovered around the 1930’s and saved the economies of the small communities around Houston. The oil boom ushered in an era of tremendous growth in the region that in some regards has yet to subside.

Today

Today the population is just over 2,000 people. The town is located within the Houston metropolitan area, which is one of the fastest growing regions in the entire country. Although Crosby has remained small, it has felt the effects of the population boom, just like all of the other towns around the area.

Things to do

Nature is a huge part of the region. Just to the north of the community is Lake Houston. This has become one of the more popular spots in this part of Texas. It is a great place to beat the summer heat. Boaters, anglers, water sport enthusiasts, and swimmers will find the lake to be a wonderful experience. A little farther down the road will put you in the Lake Houston Wilderness Park, Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge, and the Sam Houston National Forest. All of which offer hiking, wildlife, and scenery.

Just a short drive away from Crosby is Houston. It is one of the largest cities in the country and is home to some world class dining, retail, nightlife, and entertainment venues. As the city has grown it has begun attracting a vibrant culinary scene. No matter what kind of food you are looking for, you will surely find it in Houston. The city is also home to four professional sports teams and a famous rodeo. All of the major sports, except hockey, are represented in the town. There is at least one team playing nearly year round. The Rodeo Houston is one of the most famous in the country. People come from all over to check it out. Houston is also home to several museums and other various educational opportunities.
