History

Cut and Shoot is located in Montgomery County, Texas just to the northeast of Conroe. The community was incorporated in 1969 but its history dates back much further. The area’s history dates back to the mid-1800’s. It was during this time that settlers began living in Conroe. The city began as a sawmill located on Stewarts Creek. The lumber industry began to take off in the region and the town of Conroe was in position to take full advantage of it. The railroads were expanding during that time and this provided a large market for the local sawmills like the one in Conroe.

By the turn of the century, Conroe had become a major shipping center in the region. This led to expanded growth in the areas around Conroe. It was during this time that Cut and Shoot was developed. It got its name from a confrontation in the community in 1912. Legend has it that a boy who saw the confrontation became scared and said, “I’m going to cut around the corner and shoot through the bushes in a minute”. It is unclear what the confrontation was actually about, but it involved something related to the church. For some reason, the idea of “cut and shoot” stayed with the residents as they named the city.

The regions growth was stunted in the 1930’s as the Great Depression significantly hurt the lumber industry. Luckily, George W. Strake found oil on his property just south of town and the area’s population boomed. This boom has continued through the present day.

Today

The population today is about 1,000 people. It is located just on the edge of the much larger city of Conroe though; whose population is around 64,000. The area is going through a time of massive growth as with the rest of the Houston Metropolitan area.

Things to do

Cut and Shoot is sandwiched between the city of Conroe and the Sam Houston National Forest. This means that in one direction, you will find all of the benefits of a city and in the other direction you will find nature. Conroe is home to several restaurants, nightlife spots, and retail centers. There are a few local museums as well. The most notable are the Heritage Museum of Montgomery County and the Lone Star Monument and Historic Flag Park.

The Sam Houston National Forest is a wonderful place to take in nature. It is full of wildlife viewing and hiking trails. It is one of the most beautiful spots in the region to take in nature. In addition to the forest, Lake Conroe is located just a short drive away. This lake is a popular spot for boaters, swimmers, anglers, and water sports enthusiasts. It is a great place to beat the Texas heat in the summer months. The popularity of the lake has grown in recent years and it brings a large influx of tourists and visitors to the region every summer.
