History

Huffman is a community located in Harris County, Texas. Like most of the region, the first European settlers came to the area in the early 1800’s. David Huffman first settled the community in 1839. It was during this time that the native tribes in the region began being displaced despite their living in the region for thousands of years.

The early economy was based on agriculture. The primary crops in the region were cotton, rice, corn, and cattle ranching. The lumber industry also played a vital role in the economy. As with much of the region, the railroad brought increased markets and growth to the area in the early 1900’s. The first railroad to serve Huffman was the Beaumont, Sour Lake and Western Railway. This caused the community’s population to more than double in just a few years time. In 1921, the town joined the oil boom in the region with the opening of the Sinclair Oil Pump Station.

Today

The population today is around 12,000 citizens. The town’s location within the Houston metropolitan area gives it access to all of the city’s employment, educational, and entertainment opportunities. Huffman is also located on the eastern shores of Lake Houston, which is an entertainment destination in the region. This has made tourism an important part of the local economy.

Huffman’s location on Lake Houston is just one part of the many areas in the region for nature experiences. Lake Houston is a favorite location for locals for boating, fishing, swimming, and other water sports such as inter-tubing, jet skiing, and water skiing. People come from all over the region to experience the lake’s beauty and activity. Additional nature activities include the Lake Houston Wilderness Park, the Sam Houston National Forest, and the Trinity National Wildlife Refuge. These are the big ones, but there are tons of other small parks and nature areas located within a short distance of the community.

Houston is just a short drive to the southwest. Houston offers countless activities and venues for residents and tourists alike. As Houston has grown, its culinary scene, nightlife, and retail sector has also grown. The city is home to some of the most cutting edge restaurants in the country and all of it is easily accessible from Huffman. In addition to that, Houston is also home to several educational experiences including the Houston Zoo, the Houston Aquarium, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Houston Space Center, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center, and the Houston Space Center. There are also several other small museums and art centers in the city. There are four professional sports teams in Houston as well. These include the Houston Rockets, the Houston Astros, the Houston Dynamo, and the Houston Texans. They provide sporting events year round in the area. Additionally, the famous Rodeo Houston is located in the city. This famous rodeo draws visitors from all over.
