More Information About Humble, Texas
History
Humble, Texas is located just to the north of Houston. Both cities’ histories are connected to each other and both are connected to the lumber and oil industries. Humble’s first European settlers arrived in the early 1800’s. These settlers quickly multiplied and displaced the native tribes that had called the region home for centuries.
The first known settler to the community was Joseph Dunman. It is believed that he arrived in the region around 1828. Several other settlers including the namesake of the town, Pleasant Smith Humble, followed him. Like many other communities in the region, lumber and agriculture played a vital role in the community’s development.
Humble was able to escape a lot of the pain felt by many other communities during the Great Depression because it had already got its start as an oil boomtown. The first oil to flow from the community came a few years after the Spindletop discovery in Beaumont in 1904. Within a year, the Humble Oil Field was shipping oil by railcar and was Texas’ largest producing oil field. The original oil company in the region was the predecessor of Exxon.
Today
The population of the community is around 15,000 people today. The community experienced a period of massive growth when the Houston Intercontinental Airport (now the George Bush Intercontinental Airport) was opened just to the west of the town. The oilfields in the community are still producing oil. To date, they have produced nearly 140 million barrels. The area is currently one of the fastest growing regions in the entire country. Houston is currently the fourth largest city in the United States and Humble is just a few minutes drive to the north. This makes it a perfect place to live outside of the city, while still maintaining access to the employment, educational, and entertainment opportunities the city has to offer.
Things to do
The town itself is home to several parks and a museum. The museum is a great place to experience the history of the surrounding area. The exhibits are well thought out and capture the growth of the oil boomtown throughout the years. A few of the parks to enjoy in the community are the Hirsch Memorial Park, Schott Park, Old MacDonald’s Farm, the Phillip Cezeaux Recreation Building, and the Jesse H. Jones Park and Nature Center.
Humble’s location within the heart of the metropolitan area also gives it access to all of the excitement that the surrounding cities have to offer. Houston is bustling with activity and things to do. For starters, the city is home to 4 professional sports teams and the famous Rodeo Houston. You can take in a game year round in this city. There are also several museums and education opportunities in the city. Some of the most notable are the Houston Space Center, the Houston Zoo, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Houston Aquarium. These are just a few of the many located in the city. In addition to these fun activities, Houston is also home to a thriving culinary community and exciting shopping opportunities.
