History

Splendora is located in Montgomery County, Texas. It is located directly north of Houston and its history is directly tied to the boom of the metropolitan area. The original inhabitants to the region were the Orcoquiza Tribe. They lived off of the natural abundance of the region for centuries before people of European decent arrived. Europeans were drawn to the area because of the abundance of timber.

Over the course of 150 years, these people displaced the native tribes and took over the region.

In the late 19 th century, the railroad arrived in the region. At the urging of Charles Cox, the Houston, East and West Texas Railway passed through. The original name for the settlement was Cox’s Switch. Over the course of a few decades, the town established itself due to the passing rail traffic. In 1883, the first general store was built. The town was renamed Splendora in 1896 at the urging of Charles Cox. It was named after the “Splendora of its floral environment”.

The Great Depression hit the area hard. Many of the towns suffered because of the downturn in the lumber industry, which had become the primary export from the region. Luckily for the region, the downturn was short lived because of the discovery of oil just northwest of the city near Conroe. The oil boom ushered in a period of massive population and industrial growth that in many ways has yet to subside. In 1966, the town was officially incorporated.

Today

Similar to the rest of the Houston – The Woodlands – Sugarland Metropolitan area, the town has gone through massive change over the last century. Today the population of Splendora is just over 1,600 people. Even though it is smaller than many communities in the vicinity, it is apart of one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country. Over the last few decades, Houston has grown exponentially and shows no sign of letting up.

The area around Splendora is loaded with fun things to do. Because of its location within the metropolitan area, the possibilities are endless. The community itself is home to the Splendora Gardens. These botanical gardens are a great place to take a walk and enjoy nature at its finest. The community is also home to a quaint downtown. It exemplifies small town America and is a great place for shopping and restaurants.

Houston is just south of the town and with it comes dining, nightlife, shopping, educational opportunities, and entertainment. As the city has grown, it has become a culinary center in the region and country. Young, aspiring chefs have flocked to the region looking to make a name for themselves. Because of this, the area is full of wonderful restaurants and culinary experiences. Additionally, there are tons of nightlife spots and shopping. Houston is also home to several museums and educational spots. You will find tons of places to take the kids for learning. You will also find tons of places to go for fun. Houston is home to four professional sports teams and a famous rodeo. No matter what you are looking for, you are sure to find it.
