More Information About Spring, Texas

History

Spring, Texas is located about 20 miles directly north of Houston. The land that would eventually become the community was the home to the Orcoquiza Tribe of Native Americans. Like most indigenous people, the incoming European settlers to the region eventually displaced them.

In 1836, the town of Spring was officially recognized by the Texas General Council and was placed in the Harrisburg Municipality. The town remained relatively small through the rest of the 19 th century. The building of the International-Great Northern Railroad in the first few years of the 20th century fueled the first population growth. The railroad connected the town with Fort Worth and allowed for its gristmills and cotton gins to have access to a market.

In the 1970’s, Houston’s population began to expand northward. This expansion brought suburbanization to towns like Spring. Within a 40-year period, the population grew from around 1,000 to over 33,000. This rapid expansion fueled a desire by residents to preserve the Old Town of Spring. They restored houses and preserved shopping districts, which brought tourists to the quickly growing town.

Today

The population of the town is almost 55,000 people today. It is a significant part of the Houston – The Woodlands – Sugar Land Metropolitan Area. Residents in the community can live and work in the entire metropolitan area because of its proximity to Interstate 45.

Things to do

Spring sits in between The Woodlands and Houston, which gives it access to both cities and all that the cities have to offer. Within the town itself there are several outdoor activity spaces. One of the most well known is the Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Gardens. This space attracts visitors from all over the metropolitan area. A few additional spots include Pundt Park, Spring Creek Greenway, Dennis Johnston Park, Bayer Park, and Liberty Park. The town is also home to the regionally well known Wet’n’Wild Splash Town. This water park is home to rides that suit all ages and is a popular place during the hot summer months. In addition to the outdoor spots, the Old Town of Spring is a great place to visit to take in the rich history of the community. The restored houses and shopping district attract tourists from all over and is a great place to find food and shopping. The Spring Historical Museum is also located within the old town district.

The community is just a short drive north of Houston, which means that one of the country’s larges cities is within reach. Houston is home to some of the country’s top attractions. Among these attractions are several venues to take in sporting events and performances. One of the top places to take in a performance is the Houston Symphony. In addition to the symphony, Houston is home to four professional sports teams, the Houston Astros, the Houston Texans, the Houston Dynamo, and the Houston Rockets. Houston is also home to Rodeo Houston, which is nationally famous. The city is also home to several museums, restaurants, and shopping districts. Anything you could ever want can be found within a short drive.
